As the largest city in the north county coastal region, Carlsbad is home to many desirable neighborhoods—oceanfront, historic, village, and many spacious new communities.
Bordering Oceanside, the northwest part of Carlsbad was the first to be settled and as such is also known as Old Carlsbad. Carlsbad Village, or “The Village” is the lively downtown with many restaurants, shops, and hotels. The neighborhoods surrounding the village are rich with classic California architecture, including beach bungalows, charming Craftsman cottages, and airy hillside mansions.
Central Carlsbad is home to many master-planned communities like Bressi Ranch, featuring spacious Mediterranean homes surrounding a central community square for shopping and dining. For families, the nearby Alga Norte Recreation Center is a hotspot for kids and the young at heart. Also nearby is a private co-educational school for students in grades 7 through 12, Pacific Ridge, which offers an excellent student/teacher ratio (9:1).
South Carlsbad, the area west of El Camino Real, is home to the Aviara neighborhood and borders the quirky Encinitas enclave of Leucadia and the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. East of El Camino Real is La Costa, the part of town named for the renowned Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. La Costa is a desirable location in Carlsbad due to its highly ranked Encinitas Union School District—for elementary schools, and the San Dieguito Union High School District—for Junior High and High schools, as they are some of the best public schools in the County. Built by California West, a new community—Southern Preserve—offers expansive custom inspired homes in La Costa with access to the award-winning schools in the area. Also in La Costa is the luxury shopping mall, The Forum, a small shopping venue with fitness studios, salons, and a handful of notable eateries, such as the Wine Loft, Urban Plates, and Casa de Bandini.
Beautiful golf courses, beaches, lagoons, and dozens of excellent recreation facilities encourage an active lifestyle for residents of every age and interest. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon, also referred to as the Carlsbad Lagoon, is located just east of the 5 freeway south of Tamarack Avenue is a favorite place for boating, stand-up paddle-boarding and fishing.
As the golf manufacturing capital of the world, Carlsbad is home to Callaway Golf Company, TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company, Cobra Golf, Titleist, and Odyssey Golf. While golf is a notable industry for the city, Carlsbad’s other top employers include Life Technologies, Viasat, and Legoland. A destination for visitors from around the world, Legoland is also a popular local attraction for local families with an annual membership to enjoy the park anytime. The Carlsbad Premium Outlets is a shopping mecca that hosts dozens of luxury retailers, and is adjacent to the spectacularly colorful Flower Fields, which opens to the public each spring.
